Debbie, Alice, Norbet:
Thanking each of you so much for your words of encouragement once more. I never thought about sending this in our area, but maybe you are right. So many people need to see rainbows right now, not the rain. The stories are heartbreaking as each day a new one is being told.
One part of New Orleans called the 9th ward, mostly poor blacks, has scattered and torn lives apart all over the country. I feel so sorry for the elderly who are so set in their ways. One lady spoke of babecues with neighbors whom she knew for years and may never see again. Her voice trembled as she spoke of then and never being able to return. (;-(
I understand it will be a long time before anyone will live there again, if ever. All they have are their memories. No pictures, treasures, keepsakes, gardens, clothes, or homes to gather in. She spoke of how everyone worked and she always had the meal ready for the evening to come home to.
The family talks at the table at the end of the day. The grandchildren doing homework. How peaceful in a world no one even knew about. Neighbors exchanging greets, vegtables from a small, dry patch of ground. Sitting on a front porch, waving as people passed by. Kids playing kickball in the street.
The 9th ward, I am sure, was a world within a world. One that no longer exists, gone over night, drowing in the old ways most of us never know about. God bless them as we keep them and so many in our prayers this night, no mater where they are.
