This IS the better mousetrap! Most MD's get just a basic 4 years in Med School, then work to earn not learn. This book should be required reading for anybody with a relative or friend with Alzheimer's.
However, on a much wider view, the author explains how very promising treatments can be ignored by the medical world. In this case the pharmaceutical agents involved were already existing and out (or nearly out)of patent protection. There was therefore no path-to-profit for any pharmaceutical company to pursue clinical testing, certification, and marketing even though small studies indicated very promising results. It is more profitible for a company to flog products for which it already has patents and certification even though their relative effectiveness is suspect. Doctors and patients flock to heavily advertised and marketed products.
The author concludes that in this environment patients and relatives have to take more responsibility for treatments. The agents he recommends apparently have relatively few side-effects, can be used with existing treatments, and are therefore an obvious possibility for expanding treatment of patients with a devastating condition.
